A new report from the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) warns that climate misinformation is eroding public trust and stalling policy coordination. The 127-page report found that governments, political parties, corporations, and even educational institutions have played roles in promoting misleading narratives about climate science.
The report highlights the role of economic and political incentives, pointing to the fossil fuel industry, some Republican figures, and lobbying groups as key drivers of misinformation. The spread of denialism now goes beyond questioning climate science—it seeks to delegitimize it entirely.
Social media, the report says, has become a primary channel for the rapid spread of false information, particularly during severe weather events. Emotional manipulation allows misinformation to take hold and shape public discourse.
To combat this, IPIE recommends standardized carbon reporting, legal enforcement mechanisms, and better public and policymaker education. The findings are based on analysis of 300 publications from 2015 to 2025, evaluated for accuracy, consistency, and transparency.
