U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert secured victory in Tuesday’s Republican primary for a U.S. House seat, despite a scandal involving a video of her at a Denver theater and accusations of carpetbagging after leaving her current district. Boebert, known for her hard-line conservative stance, overcame several traditional Republican candidates with less name recognition.
In other GOP contests, attorney Jeff Hurd won the primary for Boebert’s 3rd Congressional District seat, and political consultant Jeff Crank defeated Colorado GOP Chairman Dave Williams in the 5th District. Boebert, now expected to win the November election, switched districts to ensure a Republican victory and blamed outside groups for targeting her.
The incident of her causing a disturbance at a “Beetlejuice” musical and switching districts did not deter her supporters. The race to replace former Rep. Ken Buck saw Republican Greg Lopez triumph in a special election to fill the remainder of Buck’s term.
The 5th District primary saw Crank defeat Williams, who faced criticism over his leadership and use of party resources for his campaign. In the newly formed 8th District, Republican Gabe Evans won the primary to challenge Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo.
In the 3rd District, Hurd, a less divisive conservative, will face Democrat Adam Frisch in the general election, with Frisch benefiting from substantial fundraising efforts.
