Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Calif.) demanded the resignation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during a tense House Armed Services Committee hearing Thursday, calling him an “embarrassment” over multiple controversies.

Carbajal condemned Hegseth for using unsecure Signal chats to share sensitive military operations, including the launch timing of airstrikes on Houthi targets in March. Participants in the chat reportedly included Hegseth’s family and media figures. Though Hegseth denies sharing classified information, Carbajal accused him of endangering U.S. troops.

“You broke the law… your inability to hold yourself accountable makes you unfit to lead,” Carbajal said.

Tensions escalated further when Hegseth declined to express support for Ukraine against Russia, stating only that “we support peace in Ukraine.” Carbajal criticized the response as weak and evasive, saying, “You’re an embarrassment to the United States.”

Lawmakers also grilled Hegseth on political loyalty to Donald Trump, a question he dodged. Carbajal concluded, “Get the hell out and let somebody competently lead this department.”
