A recall petition to remove California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has been filed by Randy Economy’s group, Saving California. The petition, signed by 105 people—more than double the required 50—cites concerns over Newsom’s handling of wildfires, crime, homelessness, and rising living costs.
The petition accuses Newsom of diverting tax funds to political agendas instead of addressing state crises. Economy’s group has previously attempted to recall Newsom, including a failed effort in 2021. The governor’s office dismissed the effort, calling it another failed attempt by “far-right activists.”
This latest recall push has gained traction following severe wildfires that devastated Los Angeles. Critics argue Newsom focused on opposing former President Donald Trump rather than addressing the crisis.
Newsom must acknowledge the petition by Feb. 7. To place the recall on the ballot, organizers must gather 1.3 million signatures within 160 days.
