Conservative Activists in California have initiated a fresh recall campaign against Governor Gavin Newsom, citing the state’s deep budget deficit and Newsom’s focus on national politics. Rescue California is spearheading this effort, arguing that Newsom’s presidential ambitions have led him to neglect state issues, including a $73 billion budget shortfall. This recall effort, the latest in a series following a defeated attempt in 2021, has attracted support from over 400 Californians, including veterans of previous campaigns.

Nathan Click, speaking for Newsom, acknowledged the seriousness of the recall threat, attributing it to Republican adversaries. The recall mechanism requires gathering signatures from 12% of the electorate from the last governor’s race, roughly equating to 1.6 million signatures to account for invalid submissions.

Critiques of Newsom’s governance focus on policy areas like immigration, criminal justice reforms, and public health measures, alongside his extensive involvement in national Democratic politics. The effort to place the recall on the November 2024 ballot faces a tight deadline, with organizers needing to collect the necessary signatures by May.
