Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy criticized members of his own party Tuesday over the racially charged backlash against Zohran Mamdani, the apparent winner of New York City‘s Democratic mayoral primary.

Responding on X, Ramaswamy called out what he termed “the race-obsessed fringe of the right,” writing, “It’s a shame to watch the race-obsessed fringe of the right try to outdo the race-obsessed woke left.”

His remarks followed a post from Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX), who told Mamdani—born in Uganda to Indian parents—to “go back to the Third World.”

Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has faced growing conservative backlash for his pro-Palestinian activism. He cofounded a Students for Justice in Palestine chapter while attending Bowdoin College.

Ramaswamy, himself the child of Indian immigrants, previously ran for president in the Republican primary and has remained vocal on intra-party debates over identity and race.
