Dozens of progressive nonprofits condemned President Trump on Monday after reports surfaced that the Department of Justice may be considering charges against George Soros’ Open Society Foundations (OSF).
Groups including the ACLU, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and Oxfam America issued a joint statement calling the targeting of political opponents “a threat to democratic values” and “an attack on our most sacred value of free speech.” The statement linked Trump’s rhetoric to broader assaults on universities, media, and advocacy organizations.
The New York Times reported that DOJ prosecutors were directed to review possible charges against OSF, echoing Trump’s accusations that Soros funded violent protests. Soros’ office rejected the allegations as “100% false,” urging supporters to speak out and sign a petition opposing what they called “weaponization of the Justice Department.”
OSF reiterated that it “unequivocally condemns terrorism and does not fund terrorism,” stressing that its U.S. work is aimed at strengthening democracy. The group said it has not been contacted by federal officials regarding any investigation.
Last week, Trump escalated his rhetoric by ordering a crackdown on “left-wing terrorism,” naming Soros and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. Nonprofits and religious groups, including the Interfaith Alliance, voiced solidarity with OSF, warning that targeting philanthropic organizations threatens free expression.
