Election officials in Virginia’s Prince William County have confirmed that approximately 4,000 votes were inaccurately reported in the 2020 presidential election, mistakenly favoring former President Trump. The county’s Office of Elections revealed that Trump received 2,327 extra votes, while President Biden was shorted 1,648 votes. Additionally, the U.S. Senate candidates from both parties and a Republican House candidate who won his race were also impacted by underreporting.

Eric Olsen, the director of elections for the county, attributed the errors to the results tapes not being programmed to match state reporting requirements, leading to mistakes during attempts to correct the issue. Olsen emphasized that the errors did not consistently favor one party or candidate, suggesting they were likely due to a combination of poor planning, a challenging election environment, and human error.

Despite these inaccuracies, Biden won Virginia by over 450,000 votes, and the misreporting did not reach the 1 percent threshold necessary for a recount. The issue came to light following a case against the county’s former registrar, Michele White, who faced charges related to the 2020 election. However, these charges have been dropped.

Olsen assured Virginians of the integrity of the state’s election systems and mentioned improvements implemented to prevent similar issues in future elections. He concluded by stating that these mistakes, while regrettable, do not indicate a deliberate effort to compromise the electoral process.
