VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV delivered a strong message against war during Palm Sunday Mass, telling tens of thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square that God does not accept the prayers of leaders who engage in violence.

The pope said Jesus is the “King of Peace” and cannot be used to justify armed conflict, emphasizing that those with “hands full of blood” will not have their prayers heard.

His remarks come as global tensions continue, including the ongoing Iran conflict and Russia’s war in Ukraine. While Pope Leo did not name specific leaders, he has increasingly criticized the violence tied to these conflicts and called for an immediate ceasefire in recent weeks.

Referencing biblical teachings, he highlighted Jesus’s rejection of violence, noting that Christ did not defend himself or endorse war even when facing arrest and execution. The pope framed his message as a broader call for peace and a rejection of attempts to use religion as justification for military actions.

Leo also acknowledged the impact of ongoing conflicts on Christian communities, particularly in the Middle East, where some may struggle to observe Easter amid instability.
