A recent NPR/PBS News/Marist poll reveals that many Americans are worried about voter fraud in the upcoming general election. This concern is largely fueled by Republicans, influenced by former President Trump’s repeated claims casting doubt on election integrity. However, voter fraud remains exceedingly rare in the U.S.

Alice Clapman, senior counsel at the Brennan Center for Justice, emphasized that research consistently shows voter fraud to be “infinitesimally rare” and not significant enough to impact election outcomes. Investigations in states like Ohio and across swing states have uncovered minimal fraud, with only a fraction of ballots affected.

Clapman also noted that many cases involve honest mistakes, such as ineligible voters mistakenly believing they were allowed to vote. Despite heightened concerns, states maintain robust systems to prevent and detect fraud, including signature matching and data-sharing programs like ERIC.
