A new CBS News poll reveals sharp divides over President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Washington, D.C., and potentially other cities. While most Republicans support the move, believing it reduces crime and enhances safety, a majority of Americans oppose it, fearing threats to personal freedoms.

Supporters back deployment regardless of city leadership, seeing it as a crime deterrent. Opponents argue Trump’s motivations are political, not public safety-related. Urban residents tend to oppose the move, while rural support is stronger, though the split aligns more with party lines than geography.

Most Americans agree both the president and local leaders should have the authority to deploy the Guard, but few want that power solely in Trump’s hands.

Trump’s approval ratings have stabilized, especially among Republicans, where immigration and crime now outweigh concerns over inflation. However, tariffs remain unpopular, with 40% of Americans cutting back purchases due to rising costs.

Most still want the Federal Reserve to act independently, though MAGA Republicans show more support for Trump influencing monetary policy.
