A Marist Poll released Thursday revealed that 73% of Americans believe the future of U.S. democracy faces a serious threat, including majorities across political affiliations. Among respondents, 86% of Democrats, 74% of independents, and 61% of Republicans expressed concern.
The results represent a slight drop from August 2023, when 74% of Americans viewed democracy as threatened. Despite widespread concern, 69% believe national elections are open and fair, while 64% think rights for those with unpopular views are protected.
An overwhelming 91% affirmed the right to non-violent protest. The poll, conducted from Dec. 3 to Dec. 5, 2024, surveyed U.S. adults through phone, text, and online methods. The margin of error is ±2.1 percentage points.
