A new CNN/SSRS poll released Sunday shows that more Americans believe neither major party demonstrates strong leadership. When asked which party is best described as having “strong leaders,” 43% of respondents said “neither,” while 40% said the Republican Party and just 16% named the Democratic Party.

Among registered voters, 44% cited Republicans, 40% said neither party, and only 15% named Democrats. The data reflects growing disillusionment with political leadership across the board.

The findings mark a significant shift from 2006, when only 10% of respondents chose “neither party,” while 49% favored Republicans and 35% favored Democrats.

The poll follows increased scrutiny of President Biden’s physical and mental fitness for office, along with broader concerns over Democratic leadership. Meanwhile, Republicans currently control the White House and both chambers of Congress.

The CNN/SSRS poll surveyed 2,539 U.S. adults from May 5–26, with a margin of error of ±2.7 percentage points.
