A new YouGov poll shows 56% of U.S. adults believe President Donald Trump will attempt to serve a third term, despite the constitutional limit of two. Just 28% said he likely won’t try, and 15% were unsure.
Trump recently told NBC News he’s “not joking” about running again, stating “there are methods which you could do it.” The comment renewed alarm among Democrats, though Republicans have largely dismissed it. Senate GOP leaders John Thune and John Cornyn suggested Trump was simply joking.
The poll also found 60% of respondents say Trump “definitely” should not be allowed a third term, while another 9% said he “probably” shouldn’t. Only 20% believe he should be allowed to serve again.
Asked who will win in 2028, voters were split evenly between Democrats and Republicans at 28%, with 36% unsure. Notably, 8% said there won’t be a presidential election at all.
The 22nd Amendment limits presidents to two elected terms, and changing it would require significant congressional and state-level support.
