A Washington Post/Ipsos poll released Thursday shows that a majority of Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump’s decision to pardon nearly all individuals charged in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

The survey found that 83% of respondents opposed pardons for violent offenders, while 55% disapproved of clemency for nonviolent rioters. Only 14% supported Trump’s move, with 3% choosing not to answer. These numbers indicate rising disapproval compared to a Reuters/Ipsos poll last month, which found 58% of Americans opposed the pardons.

The poll also reflected broader dissatisfaction with Trump’s leadership. More than half of respondents (53%) disapproved of his handling of the economy, while 54% disapproved of his management of the federal government, particularly as his administration continues widespread layoffs and spending cuts.

Additionally, 54% of Americans said they want Democrats to gain control of Congress in the next session to serve as a check on the president’s power.
