A new Associated Press/NORC poll reveals that only 35% of Democrats feel optimistic about their party’s future following their 2024 election losses. That marks a significant drop from 57% last July. Meanwhile, 36% of Democrats now express pessimism, with 29% feeling neutral.
Among all Americans, only 17% are optimistic about the Democratic Party, while 49% are pessimistic. The survey, conducted May 1–5, shows sharp contrasts between the two major parties’ voter sentiment.
Republicans report growing confidence: 55% of GOP voters say they are optimistic about their party’s future, up from 47% in July 2024. Only 20% are pessimistic, and 24% remain neutral.
Overall, 25% of Americans feel optimistic about the Republican Party, while 43% are pessimistic and 31% neutral.
The data comes as both parties adjust their strategies ahead of 2026. A separate Washington Post/ABC News poll from April found 69% of Americans view Democrats as “out of touch,” compared to 64% who say the same of the GOP.
