WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new YouGov survey finds that half of Americans now support abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), marking the first time support for eliminating the agency has reached 50% in the firm’s polling.
50% of respondents favor abolishing ICE, compared with 39% who oppose the idea. The shift follows months of heightened immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. While Democratic voters have largely supported dismantling ICE in recent surveys, the latest poll also shows a majority of Independents — 52% — backing abolition. Among Republicans, 23% now say they support eliminating the agency, though 68% remain opposed.
The survey also found broad support for limiting ICE agents’ anonymity. Three-quarters of Americans said ICE officers should be required to wear uniforms identifying them as agency personnel. A majority, 59%, said agents should not be allowed to wear face coverings while on duty. Republican respondents were more supportive of permitting face masks, with 65% favoring that option.
The online survey included 1,515 U.S. adults and was conducted from Feb. 27 to March 2. The reported margin of error is approximately 3.4%.
