Politico has addressed allegations that it benefits from taxpayer dollars, following criticism from President Trump, Elon Musk, and others. The controversy arose after Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) revealed that several federal agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), had expensed subscriptions to Politico Pro, the outlet’s premium news service.

In a statement, Politico clarified: “POLITICO is a privately owned company. We have never received any government funding—no subsidies, no grants, no handouts. Not one dime, ever, in 18 years.”

A fact-check by Lead Stories further debunked claims that USAID spent over $8 million on Politico. The government spending database indicates that USAID’s expenditures on Politico amounted to $44,000 across two transactions, both for subscriptions, not grants.

Federal agencies commonly reimburse employees for news subscriptions essential to their work. Politico noted that most Pro subscribers are from the private sector, with a 90% annual renewal rate. Critics argue that federal spending on high-cost subscriptions is wasteful, while supporters contend that such resources are vital for informed policy research.
