The Pentagon announced that transgender service members will be removed from the military within 30 days unless they obtain a waiver, according to a memo released Wednesday. The decision follows President Donald Trump’s recent executive order, which aims to reinstate a ban on transgender military service.

The memo states that troops diagnosed with or showing symptoms of gender dysphoria will be processed for separation unless they can demonstrate 36 months of stability in their assigned sex and have never attempted to transition. Waivers will be granted only in cases of compelling government interest tied to warfighting capabilities.

This policy marks another shift in the ongoing back-and-forth over transgender military service. President Joe Biden lifted Trump’s first ban in 2021, allowing transgender troops to serve openly. Trump had initially reversed Obama-era policies in 2017, with legal challenges delaying full implementation until 2019.

With the latest policy reversal, transgender troops once again face uncertainty about their military careers.
