WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has reportedly elevated its counterintelligence threat assessment for Israel to its highest classification level, citing concerns that Israeli intelligence operations have become increasingly aggressive in collecting information from U.S. officials, according to a report by NBC News.
The report states that U.S. intelligence officials believe Israeli efforts have gone beyond traditional intelligence gathering commonly conducted among allied nations. According to unnamed officials cited by NBC News, concerns center on attempts to obtain information regarding internal Trump administration discussions and policy deliberations involving conflicts and diplomatic negotiations in the Middle East.
The reported reassessment comes amid signs of growing tension between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. NBC News reported that the two leaders recently engaged in a contentious phone conversation involving Israeli military operations in Lebanon and ongoing U.S. diplomatic efforts related to Iran.
Neither the Pentagon nor the Defense Intelligence Agency publicly confirmed the reported change in threat classification. The Pentagon declined to comment on intelligence matters.
Both the White House and the Israeli Embassy in Washington rejected the allegations. Israeli officials reportedly described the claims as false and politically motivated, while the White House also disputed the characterization of the intelligence relationship between the two allies.
If confirmed, the designation could result in tighter restrictions on intelligence sharing and additional security measures involving access to sensitive information. U.S. intelligence agencies routinely evaluate espionage risks posed by both adversaries and allied nations.
