The Pentagon is sending 3,000 additional active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border as President Donald Trump ramps up efforts to tighten border security and fulfill a key campaign promise.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the deployment of a Stryker brigade combat team and a general support aviation battalion, with troops expected to arrive in the coming weeks. The new forces will reinforce the 9,200 troops already at the border, which includes 4,200 federal active-duty personnel and 5,000 National Guard members.
The Pentagon stated the deployment aims to “reinforce and expand current border security operations to seal the border and protect the territorial integrity of the United States.” The move is part of Trump’s broader strategy to increase military involvement in border enforcement and expedite migrant deportations.
The U.S. military has been deployed at the border for decades, assisting with migration enforcement, drug trafficking, and transnational crime efforts. However, Trump’s expansion of military presence signals a significant escalation in his border security policy.
