Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi candidly confronted President Joe Biden last week, expressing worries that he’s dragging down the Democratic Party. Pelosi warned Biden that some Democratic lawmakers might soon vocalize their concerns about his political weaknesses, urging him to decide on stepping down soon.
An ally of Pelosi suggested she might eventually press Biden publicly to relinquish his spot atop the Democratic ticket. “The speaker does not want to call on him to resign, but she will do everything in her power to make sure it happens,” said one source. Another source added, “There’s nothing subtle about Nancy.”
This exchange highlights an increasingly public phase in the push to remove Biden from the Democratic ticket. Senior Democrats had hoped to handle the matter privately, but Biden’s refusal to step down has led to numerous leaks keeping the president on the defensive.
The conversation between Pelosi and Biden was first reported by CNN. It followed ABC News reports that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also advised Biden to end his campaign.
Pelosi’s office denied recent contact with Biden, while White House spokesperson Andrew Bates reaffirmed Biden’s intention to remain the nominee and work with Democrats to advance his agenda.
