Immigration detention facilities are facing severe overcrowding and deteriorating conditions as President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign pushes the system beyond capacity. ICE records show over 46,000 people are currently detained, exceeding the system’s designed limit of 40,000.
Attorneys report inhumane conditions across several locations. In Miami, detainees are sleeping on floors, confined in rooms meant for half their current numbers. Paul Chavez of Americans for Immigrant Justice described the situation as “definitely out of the norm.”
In Baltimore’s G.H. Fallon Federal Building—a facility meant for short-term holding—immigrants are being kept for days without showers, mattresses, or hygiene products. One woman detained there said she was “treated worse than an animal,” according to her attorney.
Some detainees are choosing deportation over remaining in these conditions. ICE acknowledged overcrowding in some facilities and said it’s taking steps to manage capacity, including expedited case processing and transfers.
The true detention population may be underreported, as some facilities like Baltimore are not included in official occupancy reports.
