Peter Marks, the former head of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, urged parents to vaccinate their children following his recent resignation under pressure from the Trump administration. Marks cited concerns over Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his past anti-vaccine rhetoric as a key reason for stepping down.
In an interview with CNN Friday, Marks said, “Please consider getting your child vaccinated,” highlighting a deadly measles outbreak. “It is not just an innocent, benign disease. It kills one in 1,000 children in a developed country like the United States,” he warned.
Marks emphasized that measles vaccines are 98% effective in preventing infection and nearly 100% effective in preventing death. The U.S. has already reported two measles-related deaths this year. Texas has recorded 481 cases, followed by New Mexico with 51 and Oklahoma with at least 10.
Though Kennedy has recently encouraged measles vaccinations, his past statements questioning vaccine safety continue to draw scrutiny. Marks said any effort to undermine FDA vaccine standards is “breathtaking,” adding that Kennedy must “confront his maker” for spreading misinformation.
