Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters mandated public schools play a video announcing a new Department of Religious Freedom and Patriotism. The video criticizes “woke teachers unions,” includes a prayer for former President Donald Trump, and claims students may opt out of the prayer. Walters instructed schools to share the video with students and parents, but districts in Edmond and Bixby declined, while Oklahoma City officials are reviewing the directive.

The state attorney general’s office stated Walters lacks legal authority for such mandates, calling the order unenforceable and in conflict with local control and parental rights. Walters, elected in 2022, faces lawsuits over his earlier Bible-in-schools mandate, criticized for favoring Trump-endorsed Bibles. He recently purchased 500 “God Bless the USA” Bibles for $25,000 for Advanced Placement government classes.
