Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) criticized AIPAC on Wednesday for spending tens of millions in Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s (D-N.Y.) primary race after Bowman lost to a more moderate Democrat. Bowman, a second-term progressive, faced significant opposition from AIPAC due to his criticism of the Israeli government. The group spent at least $14.5 million against Bowman.

“This was about $20 million in big money being spent in a historic sum, unlike any seen in American history. Point-blank. Period,” Ocasio-Cortez stated. She emphasized the need for a conversation about AIPAC’s divisive influence within the Democratic Party, noting its primarily Republican funding.

Mainstream Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, supported George Latimer’s primary challenge against Bowman. Israel policy was central in the race, with Latimer being a strong supporter of Israel. Redistricting also complicated Bowman’s reelection bid, moving his district from the deep-blue North Bronx to the more moderate Westchester County.

Ocasio-Cortez warned that AIPAC’s influence could impact general elections by hindering coalition-building within the Democratic Party. Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) also denounced AIPAC’s role, calling for the removal of Big Money from politics.
