Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, said Sunday he doesn’t believe billionaires should exist in a society marked by widespread inequality. “It is so much money in a moment of such inequality,” Mamdani said on NBC’s Meet the Press. “What we need more of is equality across our city, our state, and our country.”
Pressed by Kristen Welker about whether billionaires have a right to exist, the democratic socialist nominee reiterated his stance but added, “I look forward to working with everyone, including billionaires, to make a city that is fairer for all of them.”
Mamdani has drawn national attention after defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary. If elected, he would become New York City’s first Muslim and Asian mayor.
Citing persistent poverty, Mamdani said one in four New Yorkers lives below the poverty line and many others face constant financial stress. “This is a city that needs to be affordable for the people who build it every day,” he said.
