A North Carolina Senate committee has advanced a bill that would allow employees and volunteers at private K–12 schools to carry concealed firearms on school grounds. Senate Bill 280, approved Tuesday by the Senate Judiciary Committee, permits individuals with a valid concealed carry permit and additional training to bring handguns and stun guns onto school property—if authorized by school administrators and with written notice to parents.
The bill also includes a provision allowing firearms at religious events held on school property, such as weddings or funerals, at the discretion of the school. Sen. Steve Jarvis (R-Davidson), the bill’s sponsor, said it “balances safety with individual rights.”
Democrats raised concerns, especially in light of a separate bill allowing permitless concealed carry, warning it could weaken SB 280’s reliance on permit requirements. Critics also called for background vetting against state abuse and neglect lists.
Public input was mixed, with religious school leaders supporting the measure, while a representative from Moms Demand Action warned it could worsen chaos during shootings.
