Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Thursday the Trump administration is purchasing additional buildings in Chicago to expand operations for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“We’re purchasing more buildings in Chicago to operate out of,” Noem told President Donald Trump during a cabinet meeting. She said the effort aims to increase federal law enforcement capacity amid unrest in the city. Noem added she recently toured sites suitable for expansion, including one near the immigration processing facility in Broadview, Illinois, telling ICE officials, “We’re going to try to buy that building today.”

The move follows Trump’s deployment of roughly 700 National Guard members to Chicago and Portland. However, U.S. District Judge April Perry temporarily blocked the federalization of Illinois troops until October 23.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) condemned the actions, saying Trump’s push represents “the path to full-blown authoritarianism.”
