WASHINGTON, D.C., In a tense House Committee on Homeland Security hearing, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem clashed with Democratic representatives over the Trump administration’s handling of immigration enforcement. The hearing, focused on “Worldwide Threats to the Homeland,” featured sharp questioning from lawmakers regarding non-criminal immigrants and U.S. citizens being detained by federal agents. Noem, who repeatedly asserted that the government was protecting Americans from threats, faced calls for her resignation from some members of the committee.

Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-R.I.) confronted Noem with the case of Sae Joon Park, a U.S. Army combat veteran who was deported to South Korea despite his Purple Heart status. Noem denied that U.S. citizens or veterans were being deported, though Park had been detained by Customs and Border Protection and placed on a deportation list. Magaziner highlighted Park’s struggles with PTSD and substance abuse, emphasizing that his offense was a minor drug charge from the 1990s.

The discussion also focused on reports of ICE detaining U.S. citizens, including a 10-year-old girl undergoing cancer treatment, a case that Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) used to accuse DHS of illegal actions. As Noem left the hearing early, Rep. Julie Johnson (D-Texas) criticized the lack of due process, citing a facility in Dallas where 70% of detainees had no criminal records.
