Washington, DC — Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reportedly created and posted an unauthorized State Department press release announcing her new role as a senior adviser, raising fresh questions about how her transition inside the Trump administration was handled.
Politico reported Friday that two people familiar with Noem’s State Department role said the statement she posted on X was never approved by the department. One source said Noem “went rogue and created a fake letterhead to post on X.” Noem and the State Department did not respond to Politico’s requests for comment.
The statement said Noem’s six-month appointment as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas had ended and that she remained at the department as a senior adviser.
The underlying job change itself appears to be real. A State Department official told CBS News a day earlier that Noem’s envoy status had expired and that she was now advising Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau while continuing work on the same regional security portfolio.
Noem was moved to the envoy role in March after President Donald Trump replaced her as homeland security secretary with Markwayne Mullin.
The dispute therefore centers not on whether Noem remains employed by the administration, but on whether she improperly presented an unofficial statement as an authorized State Department release.
