Sacramento, California — California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he would not run for president in 2028 if former Vice President Kamala Harris enters the Democratic primary, arguing that a contest between the two longtime California politicians would be damaging to both.
Newsom made the comments during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper at his in-laws’ ranch in Montana. Asked whether he would run if Harris did, Newsom replied, “I wouldn’t run if she ran.” He later described such a matchup as “mutual assured destruction” and a political gift to their opponents.
Neither Newsom nor Harris has announced a 2028 presidential campaign. Both, however, have publicly left open the possibility of running. Newsom is term-limited as California governor, while Harris has remained politically active since losing the 2024 presidential election.
Newsom has recently increased his national political activity, traveling to early-primary states and campaigning for Democratic candidates. His South Carolina appearances and “Take It Back” tour have fueled speculation about a potential presidential bid.
Newsom also told CNN that family considerations would factor heavily into any decision. He said his wife and children would need to support a campaign, calling their opposition a “non-starter.”
His comments do not clear the Democratic field for Harris, who has not declared her candidacy, but they establish one significant condition affecting Newsom’s own decision about 2028.
