California Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) to complete the Senate term of Sen. Laphonza Butler, who announced her resignation effective Sunday. Schiff, who has served in the House since 2001 and recently won election to a full Senate term, will begin his Senate duties weeks ahead of the new Congress in January.
Butler, appointed in October 2023 to succeed the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chose not to seek a full term. Newsom praised Butler for her dedication and contributions, stating she honored Feinstein’s legacy with her work.
Schiff, a prominent critic of President-elect Donald Trump, led Trump’s first impeachment and has frequently condemned his rhetoric as authoritarian. Despite Trump’s targeting of Schiff, the senator-elect has expressed confidence in the resilience of the U.S. system, rejecting suggestions of a preemptive pardon from President Biden.
Schiff will join Andy Kim (D-N.J.), also newly appointed by Gov. Phil Murphy (D-N.J.), as a new member of the Senate.
