Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine has expressed concern over the growing support for Donald Trump in New York, a state that has historically leaned Democratic. Levine’s comments come as recent polls indicate a tighter race between Trump and President Joe Biden than in the previous election.
In a statement to Politico, Levine highlighted the unexpected backing Trump is receiving, particularly among communities of color, describing it as “alarming.” He called for the Democratic Party to intensify its efforts to counter this trend and avoid a repeat of the 2022 midterm elections, where Republicans made significant gains in New York.
Trump’s outreach efforts seem to be resonating with some voters in New York, as evidenced by his recent rally in the Bronx aimed at courting Black and Hispanic voters. Despite skepticism from political analysts about Trump’s chances of winning the state, he has declared his intention to “make a heavy play for New York.”
Polls show varying leads for Biden over Trump, with a Siena College poll indicating a 9-point advantage for Biden, while a Slingshot Strategies survey shows a more substantial lead. However, these margins are narrower compared to the 2020 election results, where Biden secured nearly 61 percent of the New York vote against Trump’s 38 percent.
