New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a law ensuring books cannot be removed from libraries or schools based on their origin, author views, or controversial content. The law requires public and school library boards to establish clear guidelines for handling complaints and book removals, permitting restrictions only on developmentally inappropriate materials for specific age groups.

The law also shields librarians from legal action regarding book bans. Governor Murphy stated, “The Freedom to Read Act cements New Jersey’s role on the forefront of preventing book bans and protecting intellectual freedom.” New Jersey joins Minnesota and Illinois in enacting such protections.

The law responds to a rise in book bans, particularly in Republican-led states like Florida. Advocates are concerned about potential federal policies affecting book access under a new Trump administration.
