JERUSALEM, Israel Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally requested a presidential pardon to end his long-running corruption trial, a move he says is necessary to restore unity during a period of regional upheaval. The request, submitted Sunday to the Office of the President, immediately sparked criticism from political opponents who argued that granting clemency would undermine the nation’s legal system.

Netanyahu is on trial for fraud, breach of trust, and bribery in three cases alleging he exchanged political favors with wealthy associates. He denies wrongdoing and has repeatedly called the investigations a politically motivated effort by law enforcement and the media. He said the ongoing requirement to appear in court multiple days a week hinders his ability to govern and deepens national divisions.

The pardon request includes a detailed letter from his attorney and a personal letter from Netanyahu. President Isaac Herzog’s office described the request as “extraordinary” with far-reaching consequences. Legal experts noted the request cannot pause the trial and that only the attorney general has authority to halt proceedings.

The move follows calls from U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this month urging Israel to pardon Netanyahu, labeling the prosecution “political” and “unjustified.”

Opposition leaders condemned the request. Yair Lapid insisted that no pardon should be considered without an admission of guilt, remorse, and Netanyahu’s withdrawal from political life.
