White House trade adviser Peter Navarro defended President Donald Trump‘s fluctuating trade policy during a Sunday appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, claiming the 90-day pause on heightened tariffs could yield a flurry of new trade agreements.
“This is unfolding exactly like we thought it would,” Navarro said, dismissing concerns about policy instability. He argued the initial announcement of steep tariffs was designed to bring trading partners to the negotiating table. “We’ve got 90 deals in 90 days possibly pending here.”
Trump earlier this month announced a 10% baseline tariff on all imports and higher “reciprocal” tariffs targeting dozens of countries. After global backlash, the administration issued a 90-day pause on most elevated tariffs—excluding China—reverting many back to the 10% rate.
Tariffs on Chinese goods have since reached 125%, with Beijing responding in kind. Still, Trump announced Friday that electronics, including those from China, would be exempted, easing fears within the tech sector.
