More than 1,300 “Hands Off” protests took place across the U.S. on Saturday, uniting demonstrators around opposition to the Trump administration’s agenda. Protesters cited a wide range of concerns, including cuts to education, healthcare, veteran services, Social Security, and reproductive rights, as well as immigration enforcement and billionaire Elon Musk’s role in government.
In Washington, D.C., thousands rallied near the Washington Monument. “They’re coming after everything,” said Kelley Laird of Maryland. “We have to be in this for the long run.”
Boston demonstrators called for the release of Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk, while Portland protesters denounced what they called a “billionaire power grab.” In North Carolina, over 300 people protested cuts to national parks and education.
Veterans Colleen Boland and Sonia Lundy described their participation as fulfilling their military oath to defend against “enemies foreign and domestic.” Many voiced concerns about the future of Social Security amid planned office closures and staff reductions.
In Charlottesville, Va., retirees Al and Bev Mirmelstein traveled by bus to join the D.C. rally. “Save our democracy,” read their signs.
