Washington, DC — Republican Rep. Nancy Mace delivered one of the harshest conservative condemnations yet of Vivek Ramaswamy’s attack ad featuring the estranged mother of Democratic Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton.
“This ad is going to go down as the most shameful, disgusting, offensive ad this election season,” Mace told CNN. She said Ramaswamy had managed to “limbo under the lowest bar of decency” by attacking a woman who has publicly described being sexually abused by her stepfather as a child.
Acton and her brother have said their mother failed to protect her from the abuse and remained married to the man after he was charged. Acton was removed from her mother’s custody at age 12 and has been estranged from her since.
Ramaswamy’s campaign produced the ad and is spending $4 million to air it despite bipartisan criticism. The spot features Acton’s mother calling her daughter a “liar” and disputing portions of her childhood story.
Mace, who has publicly discussed surviving sexual assault herself, said she previously considered herself a major Ramaswamy supporter but was “stunned” by the campaign’s decision.
She also criticized Vice President JD Vance for defending the ad and warned that the controversy could further damage Republicans with women voters.
Ohio Republican Sen. Jon Husted and several conservative commentators have also distanced themselves from the advertisement.
