Elon Musk faced criticism from German politicians after writing a commentary supporting the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD). Published in the Welt am Sonntag, the piece praised the AfD’s stances on regulation, taxes, and market deregulation. Musk previously posted on platform X that “only the AfD can save Germany.”

The commentary drew sharp responses. Friedrich Merz, leader of the opposition Christian Democrats, called it “intrusive and pretentious,” noting it marked unprecedented election interference by a foreign figure. Saskia Esken, co-leader of the Social Democrats, accused Musk of prioritizing profit over democracy and workers’ rights, stating Germany’s democracy is “defensible and cannot be bought.”

The article’s publication prompted the resignation of Welt’s opinion editor, though its incoming editor-in-chief defended the decision, citing freedom of opinion. With elections set for February 23, the AfD, polling second, could challenge Germany’s mainstream parties, who have pledged to exclude the AfD from any national coalition.
