Tech billionaire Elon Musk said Sunday he does not want to take responsibility for all the policies of the Donald Trump administration, now that his tenure as a special government adviser has ended. Speaking to CBS News’s “Sunday Morning,” Musk said, “It’s not like I agree with everything the administration does,” but added that criticizing Trump publicly creates a “bone of contention.”
Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has faced intense scrutiny for aggressive downsizing of federal agencies. While Musk defended DOGE’s work to cut what he called “wasteful” spending, he said the department unfairly became the “whipping boy” for all perceived cuts—including Social Security, which he clarified was unaffected.
Though his official government role ended Friday, Musk said he’ll continue advising Trump informally when asked. His remarks reflect a subtle attempt to create distance from controversial aspects of Trump’s governance while still standing by core goals like shrinking government.
