Elon Musk, leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), announced Monday that federal employees who have not returned to in-person work will be placed on administrative leave this week.
The move follows President Donald Trump’s January executive order mandating a full return to pre-pandemic office attendance. “Those who ignored President Trump’s executive order to return to work have now received over a month’s warning,” Musk posted on X. “Starting this week, those who still fail to return to office will be placed on administrative leave.”
The administration has pushed for a significant reduction in remote work, arguing that federal agencies are occupying office spaces that remain largely unused. Musk’s post was in response to Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), who claimed that government buildings were only half-occupied.
To encourage departures, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) offered federal employees buyout plans, a move that has sparked pushback from unions and some Democratic lawmakers. Over the weekend, OPM also asked federal employees to list their work accomplishments, warning that failure to respond would be considered a resignation—further intensifying tensions within the administration.
