Elon Musk is scaling back his plans to launch a new political party, according to reporting from the Wall Street Journal. Musk told associates he wants to focus on his companies and avoid alienating influential Republicans by forming a third party that could siphon GOP votes.

The shift marks a reversal from last month, when Musk publicly announced the “America Party” to represent voters dissatisfied with both Democrats and Republicans. While not fully ruling out the idea, Musk’s team canceled calls with outside organizers who specialize in ballot access.

Allies say Musk remains in close contact with Vice President JD Vance, a rising figure in the MAGA movement, and is weighing support for a possible 2028 Vance presidential run. Musk spent roughly $300 million backing Trump and Republicans in 2024.

Musk’s strained relationship with Trump earlier this year has cooled, with both men publicly avoiding recent clashes. Trump signaled support for Musk’s companies, while federal reviews preserved critical SpaceX contracts.

The Libertarian Party has attempted to recruit Musk, but its leaders say they’ve heard little from him. “It’s almost an eerie silence,” Libertarian National Committee chair Steven Nekhaila said.
