Elon Musk announced Saturday on X that he has officially launched a new political party, the “America Party,” intensifying his feud with President Donald Trump over the recently passed “Big Beautiful Bill.” Musk said the party’s goal is to “give you back your freedom.”
The move follows Musk’s July 4 poll in which 65% of over 1.2 million respondents supported independence from the two-party system. Musk previously supported Trump’s 2024 campaign but began attacking the president’s $4.5 trillion spending bill, calling it “debt slavery” and a “pork-filled” disaster.
The bill passed Congress and was signed by Trump on Independence Day, adding to their fallout. Trump retaliated by floating the possibility of investigating or even deporting Musk, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from South Africa.
Musk said his party will focus narrowly on flipping a few House and Senate seats to act as swing votes in Congress. Wall Street analysts, including Tesla supporters, have warned that Musk’s political moves risk distracting him from business, with some already downgrading Tesla stock.
