Authorities say multiple people were shot Sunday morning at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, and the suspected gunman is down. The church, located about 50 miles north of Detroit, was engulfed in flames when first responders arrived, according to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Chris Swanson described the scene as “dynamic,” confirming the area was evacuated and that both local and federal agencies were on-site. “The entire church is on fire,” he said, noting that more details will be released as the investigation develops. Multiple emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, ambulances, and a State Police bomb squad vehicle, responded to the scene.
Officials have not yet released information on the victims’ conditions. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer expressed condolences to the community, calling the violence “unacceptable, especially in a place of worship.”
Grand Blanc, a community of about 8,000 people near Flint, is home to several churches, including another nearby Jehovah’s Witness congregation.
The attack occurred a day after Russell M. Nelson, longtime leader of the Mormon faith, died at age 101. Following church protocol, Dallin H. Oaks is expected to succeed him as president.
