Eight people were injured Sunday when a man wielding a makeshift flamethrower and shouting “Free Palestine” attacked a pro-Israeli hostage solidarity gathering in Boulder, Colorado. The suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, was arrested and faces potential terrorism charges, officials confirmed.
The attack occurred at the Pearl Street Mall during a demonstration by Run For Their Lives, a volunteer group advocating for hostages held by Hamas. Witnesses said Soliman threw incendiary devices into the crowd, setting people on fire. A video shows him reemerging with another Molotov cocktail, which ignited him before he was arrested.
Victims, ranging from age 52 to 88, sustained injuries from minor to serious burns. The FBI labeled the attack an act of terrorism and the Justice Department cited rising antisemitic violence. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the attack a “vicious terror attack” on peaceful individuals “simply because they were Jews.”
Authorities believe Soliman acted alone. The incident echoes a recent fatal shooting of Israeli embassy staffers in Washington and comes amid elevated security for the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.
