Minnesota prosecutors have filed three misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges against a woman accused of directing a racist slur at a Black child during an April playground confrontation in Rochester.
The criminal complaint alleges she used “offensive, obscene, or abusive language” that could provoke anger or alarm. A widely shared video captured the incident, showing her admitting to using the slur, repeating it, and flashing her middle finger at a bystander who confronted her.
Despite the charges, the woman has raised more than $800,000 on the Christian fundraising platform GiveSendGo, with a stated goal of $1 million. In a June update, she called herself a victim of “misinformation” and framed the case as a First Amendment issue.
The complaint says the child, identified as autistic, took an applesauce pouch from a diaper bag, prompting the woman to chase him and repeatedly call him the epithet. Mayor Kim Norton called the incident deeply damaging to the community. The NAACP Rochester chapter raised $340,000 for the family and praised the charges as a first step toward justice.
