Vance Luther Boelter, 57, has been arrested in connection with a deadly Minnesota shooting that left former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband dead, and State Senator John Hoffman and his wife injured. Boelter was captured Sunday in Minnesota following a nearly two-day manhunt, Associated Press reports.

Authorities allege Boelter impersonated a police officer, using a fake squad vehicle outfitted with emergency lights and carrying multiple AK-style weapons. Investigators also found writings mentioning both victims inside the car. Law enforcement called the betrayal of the uniform “deeply disturbing.”

Boelter had previously been appointed to Minnesota workforce boards by Democratic Governors Mark Dayton (2016) and Tim Walz (2019). His roommate, David Carlson, alerted police after receiving a 6 a.m. text from Boelter suggesting he had committed the shootings and might soon die by suicide. When asked about political affiliation, Carlson said Boelter was a strong supporter of President Donald Trump, but said he had no idea Boelter knew about state politics.

Donald Trump said the FBI and Attorney General Pam Bondi are investigating. Gov. Tim Walz condemned the acts as “targeted political violence.”
