Authorities have identified 57-year-old Vance Boelter as the suspect in Saturday’s fatal shootings of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. The suspect also allegedly shot and wounded State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in a separate attack. Both incidents are being treated as politically motivated acts of violence.

Boelter, who once served on Minnesota’s nonpartisan Governor’s Workforce Development Council under both Democratic and Republican administrations, is now the subject of an intense manhunt. Police say he impersonated a law enforcement officer, donning a fake police uniform, armored vest, and operating a vehicle resembling a squad car equipped with emergency lights.

The attacks began just after 2 a.m. at Hoffman’s Champlin residence and continued at 3:35 a.m. at Hortman’s Brooklyn Park home, where officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who fled on foot.

Gov. Tim Walz called the shootings a “politically motivated assassination,” describing Hortman as an irreplaceable public servant. Hoffman and his wife remain hospitalized after undergoing surgery.

President Trump confirmed federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are involved in the investigation. Lawmakers statewide have been placed under protective custody.
