A federal jury in Colorado has ordered MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell to pay $2.3 million in damages to Eric Coomer, a former executive at Dominion Voting Systems, over defamatory claims made following the 2020 election.
Lindell, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, accused Coomer of committing “treason” and promoting election fraud. During the trial, Lindell reiterated his claims that the election was stolen, but failed to present expert witnesses or evidence. His legal team argued his statements were protected by the First Amendment and that Coomer’s reputation was already damaged.
The jury rejected those defenses, concluding Lindell’s remarks were not protected speech. Coomer, who said the conspiracy theories ruined his career and led to ongoing death threats, originally sought $62.7 million in damages.
Lindell, who claims to be $10 million in debt from election-related lawsuits, vowed to appeal. He also faces a separate, ongoing defamation suit filed by Dominion Voting Systems in 2021.
